ok, im new to the boating world. bought my first boat last summer(2010) got a nice deal on a 21ft bayliner trophy, after 1 1/2 seasons using it im not liking the hp in it. im lucky to break 19mph with 3 people and all my gear. im wondering what i have to do so i can get up to at least 25-30 mph,
1) can i turbo charge the motor? i want to get to at least 160 hp, and im at 110 now
2) what other engines will fit the v.p. 270 outdrive?

please note im only 21 and want to keep this as cheep as i can.

Re: 1985 21ft bayliner trophy with aq125a/270 outdrive please help!

the only reason i got the boat was because it was in good shape, and i sold everything it came with and actually profited from it, then set it up the way i wanted, i only payed $3,000 for the boat, but now have close to $8,000 in gear for it. I bought an 18ft glasstron with a 270 outdrive (just to get a spare outdrive) for $150. sold the trailer for $300, the glasstron came with an inline 6 v.p. but the guy i bought it from left the head off it for 7 years. that has close to 180hp im told. i would like to find another like it just because i know it matches the outdrive.
some people said go with a 350 chevy but im not sure what i would need to convert it.

and everyone who has fished out of my boat says its the best set up next to a pro charter boat, i would rather pay $2,000-$3,000 for a bigger motor than start all over. boat has a ton of room for salmon fishing and can handle bigger waves than i would fish in. just doesnt get me from point a to point b as fast as i would like

My previous boat was a 1983 30' Sportcraft with flybridge and a pair of Chevy 305 cid V-8 with V.P. 270 stern drives. It was a great performer fast (35 MPH) and economical.

I suggest you look to find an older P.O.S. boat with this engine & a V.P. 270 drive (for a give away price) and you should get enough HP for your Bayliner. The engines were rated at 210 HP so they should move you in the mid 20s. My current boat has 5.7 (350) chevys and are rated at 250 HP but are coupled to V.P. SX drives for the added HP.

Best of luck finding exactly what you need, but a look at local Craig's list (or SearchTempest) may yield some candidates that have serious stringer or transom rot and can be parted-out. A few Hundred may get just what you need.

Agreed, a donor boat is your best bet. The six cylinder engines are not a good option. A V8 would be the best.

The outdrive must have the correct gear ratio to match the engine. 4 cyl engines use outdrives with a different gear ratio than V8's. And its not easy to change the ratio. So finding a complete drivetrain is your best option.

I think the 21 ft Trophy was available with a v8.
if you keep the 4 cylinder transom shield you need the aq200B or aq225B 3" y pipe [# 23] and 3" exhaust risers, to match up to the single exhaust relief.

or change to the v8 transom shield and double relief y pipe and aq260 exhaust.

you need the v-8 flywheel cover, crankshaft pump , motor mounts and the 1.61:1 lower unit.
The 4 cylinder upper unit and intermediate hsg can be used. the lower unit is easy to change but must be reshimmed.

i would rather pay $2,000-$3,000 for a bigger motor than start all over.
if you are careful you might be able to do this. the 4 banger will see too.

this might be dumb, but i think i heard that the inline 6, and v8's use the same gear ratio? this doesnt make sense to me. some of the pics i have seen of the v8's look pretty bulky, does anyone know rough dimensions?

also there was a web site where you can get re-manufactured engines with 50 more hp than they originally came with, for less than $2,500.

i have spent several hours the last few months trying to figure out what these bayliners all came with, and most of them have the same motor/drive as mine.

what about switching to a merc? a fella in town has a 190hp mercruiser and outdrive. he said he would sell it to me for $300. looks like its in great shape and does run. but i dont want to cut any new holes in her.

The hole in the transom is too big for the Merc transom shield. Look at this drawing.

Cutout comparison.jpg

You would have to rebuild the transom, then recut the smaller hole. (No you can't just fill the hole in a little bit, the transom is the support)

Id stay with the Volvo Penta cone clutch drive and use what you have minus the lower unit.
the inline 6 ratio is 1.89:1 the v8 ratio is 1.61:1.
some of the v6s in the smaller boats can also use the 1.61:1 ratio.

Ayuh,... If it's a 4 cylinder, you'll be steppin' Backwards...

If it's a 6 or 8 cylinder, well, that'd be a Good move...

ok, how can i tell the gear ratio in the spare outdrive? (the one that came off a boat with an inline6) there are multiple 4 cylinders from volvo ranging from 110-150 hp, someone was saying something about swapping heads and manifolds, and turbo charging it. and they seemed to like it and sounded like a cheeper fix? im really confused! ha

Remove the ring anode and wire brush the prop shaft bearing carrier. The ratio should be stamped into the carrier. It will be good if no one has changed the ratio and forgot to re-stamp it.

That would be a bad choice, the marine parts for that engine are almost non existent. If you do find them they are expensive.

You're putting the cart before the horse.
Until you get an engine and drive and some rpm numbers, which prop isn't a question that can be answered.
When you do get it ready to go, ask that question over in the prop form, and read the stickies in the forum so you know what your looking for.

i learned the hard way about boats, bought one that just needed a starter. yeah right, pulled engines out drives, re read post # 2 that is the best advice anyone can give. there is alot of good fishing boats out there...if you dont get a complete unit that you can see run to bolt into yours, you better have a good paying job. you're gonna need it.....kc

Re: 1985 21ft bayliner trophy with aq125a/270 outdrive please help!

i think im going to just find an aq 4 cylinder with more hp, should mount, and hook up the same, for the most part. maybe try and beef it up. as for the prop i guess im asking if the 15" diameter prop is more so recommended than a 14'' because of the weight? i have a 15x15 on it now, but im thinking of moving to a faster prop. (no troubles planing) and im running about 4700-4800 rpm's wide open.

I want to also say thank you to you guys for helping me out. im learning a ton of stuff.

4,800 is right where you want to be, with a well tuned engine.
