Reed valves should have been looked at when carburetors were off.-----------------What are the results of a compression test ?

Check the sparks very carefully. These motor are susceptible to power pack failure when they get old. Very rare to have reed problems.

You didn't mention a straight fuel filter ahead of the carbs ...in addition to a water/fuel separator. Is the gas filter clean ?

I went nuts with that motor with a lot of running issues.... And after 4 carb rebuilds and much frustration going through everything I could think of ..multiple times. I ordered the complete gaskets kits for each carb and fix all my issues. Maybe $25 each carb. Mine is an xr4 But this race or high performance type motor does not have a super smooth idle. But above that it screams.

Old gaskets looked fine but don't hold enough or steady vacuum at idle to get fuel all the way up to the upper idle circuits on top of carbs.
