Hi... I am after some advice on this water leak, if it is just a gasket or if it is bad and also the best way to lift this motor from the boat as it has no lift hook like other outboards I have had. Can I just lift by the fly wheel with three bolts threaded into the puller holes?

The purpose of those three threaded holes is three fold as you suspect..... *pulling the flywheel and also *lifting the engine or *removing the powerhead. Just be sure to have those bolts tight on the lifting ring.

I use an adapter.----Take off flywheel nut and screw my adapter on crankshaft.---Or yes you can use those 5/16-NF holes as well for a straight up lift.

I prefer to lift from the flywheel. That way the motor hangs more or less straight up'n down? Buddy made this for me. Also doubles as a puller.

As racer said, remember those holes are Fine thread.

I've done it using an harmonic balancer puller with the center bolt snugged to the dimple in the crank (crank nut left torqued on) and wrapped a chain through the puller. Worked a treat, and I have a puller to boot.
