1984 175hp Johnson Model J175TXCNB, S/N J5702547. The stator has 2 yellow wires coming out of it plus 2 other wires going to a plug that connects to what I assume is a power pack. If I disconnect all the wires, and check the yellow to ground, I show a short. Does this mean (1) the stator is dead, or (2) I don't know what I am doing? I don't want to go spend couple hundred bucks if I can avoid it.

You should not have a reading going to ground. What type of a meter are you using, and what is the reading. Does the stator show and melting, or discoloration. What kind of a problem are you having that you suspect the stator?

No charging. Simpson meter - very good. Rectifier checks out.

Is that a Simpson model 260 analog meter by chance? If it shows a short to ground, that should be your problem.

yep, a 260. If the yellow wires show short to ground then the stator is bad?
