Hi all,
I'm new to the site, but found these sites very useful in the past. I've been a boat owner off and on all my life. i just bought a 1985 15' Sea Hunter Arima fishing boat that came with a 1984 Mercury 75 hp 4 cylinder. The motor looks like new, not so much as a nick on the lower end and the inside is clean enough to eat off. I'm hoping I got lucky and have a winer of a motor, I have not yet ran it, but was told it would fire right up and the cylinders were all at correct compression. My question is, what type of motor do i have here? Is this year good or full of problems. Why does it have four cylinders when many Mercurys had only 3 cylinders. Is 4 better than 3? Any history on this make and year of Mercury motor woul dbe great. Is it easy to work on? should i buy a service manual or just plan on taking it to a shop? Are there any known problem areas with this motor I should look into before I take it out? I've had a couple older merc 20 hp and I have an old 4 hp noe that i try to keep togather myself.
Thank you all for the help. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences as well.
Scot.
