I have a 1984 50hp 4cyl 2 cycle outboard. After some coaxing, I can get the motor to run. After it idles for awhile, it will shut off. If I run it down the lake for awhile, it will idle for about a minute before it shuts off. If I shift into forward and don't immediately throttle it, it shuts off. Any ideas? Also, when I shift into reverse, at idle speeds it works fine, but grinds gears if I try and go fast. Any ideas on either would be appreciated.

sync and lync on this motor is critical. they were one of the best mercs ever made and can idle well. buy a good manual and follow sync and lync procedures to the letter and you should be able to get itto idle assuming the engine isn't worn terribly. try adjusting the shift cable to reverse. it should shift evenly at the control box from neutral to foward and from neutral to reverse. if not you probably have a worn clutch and reverse gear. good luck

I put new plugs in and the wiring is good. I'm thinking it might be a idle adjustment on the carbs

Don't turn the idle to high 650 is about right or you will tear out bottom end gears also from your post sounds like you already have that issue check your bottom end fulid ,also check your wires and connections at recitifer
