1984 Mercury 50 hp dropping cylinder?

I have a 1984 50hp two stroke 4 cylinder outboard on a 14' Lund pro angler aluminum boat. The motor had sat in my dads barn for 7-8 years. I finally bought it from him. I knew it would have some issues from sitting so long. I also knew that it had very low hours. (my Dad loves to buy things and never do anything with them).

So I put a new water pump kit in, new plugs, new fuel lines and primer bulb. New starter, new gasket set, and cleaned out both carbs.

Even after replacing all of this, I can get it to start (but it takes some cranking when its cold) But it seems as though it has a intermittent loss of power.

Then after running a little bit, the motor makes a clunk noise and it as no problem getting on a plane and running great. (runs the way it should)

-Could this be cylinder dropping from bad coil?

- Is there a easy way for me to test a coil?

One thing that I had just thought of: I am using the original Metal gas can. Not sure if the gas can could give me troubles like that?

Any help or suggestions would be great!

Thanks

Hey anyquist,
I have the same engine and had a similar issue. Eventually I stopped getting a spark on all cylinders. I tracked down the problem to the wiring on both the stator and the trigger. Essentially the plastic wiring insulation had crumbled away and the wires started to disintegrate. I am almost finished with replacing stator, trigger, and switchbox(I figured I might as well).
