1984 Merc 9.8 Reverse Lock Mechanism

Hello all,<br /><br />I have very recently purchased a used boat and motor (1984 Merc 9.8). I am very new to wrenching on outboards, but have many years of experience on cars, so please bear with me. <br />The reverse lock din't click into the tilt lock pin when I purchased the boat. The cable/wire between the gear housing and the reverse lock was jammed next to the socket on the reverse lock. I placed it into the socket and now the reverse lock locks into place, but it won't go into reverse. The gear lever clicks in, but it won't engage. I tried putting it back how it was, but can't get it to work. Any schematics, help, etc would be very helpful.
