Plenty of parts available. Give some thought to replacing the water pump, thermostats and plugs.

If the Data plate says 40, then that's the engine you have and should order parts according to the complete mod. number.
Maybe I've missed something here, but what is the reason for stating it's a 50hp?????

What Kenny said and did ya' try a vacuum test on the lower unit?? The seals work two ways. The inside seal keeps oil in while the outside seals keep water out...easy way to look at it.

Hi janthony1001

The 40 and 50 HP are very close to same motor. If the seals on the drain plug are leaking, that can be the coarse. That too can bee the coarse you didnt find the leak at the test, you probably did it from the drain plug threads. I would try to flush it, add fresh oil and run it for 3-5 hrs. If no milky oil, watch it thru season - write it in you calender !!

I did a vacuum test and it failed. Which seal is that one going to be. and on the engine horse power. The engine id number is e40 and on the mounting bracket to the transom it has j50

Re: 1984 JOHNSON LOWER UNIT

Jan....most likely the prop shaft seals are the bad seals. However, to find the bad ones, you will need to drop the lower unit. Set up the lower unit so you can cover the seals with water and then pull a vacuum on the unit. If the water level goes down around the seal, that's the bad one. You also have a large o'ring around the prop shaft bearing carrier and a shift rod o'ring. If if were mine, I'd just get a reseal kit and reseal the whole lower unit.

What we would like to see is the whole model number from the engine. You can get it from the transom bracket or from the core plug on the engine block. This would not give you any problem with the lower unit seal kit as they are the same but may give some problems with other components.

Keep us posted and if you don't have a manual, get one....especially if you are going to do the work yerself.

a seal kit is about $45, i priced one last week.
cheap insurance.
not too tough to tear this lower down, might need a bit of heat on the lower bearing cage/housing/prop shaft support to pull it from the lower case.
