I am new to this and was given a boat with a 1984 Johnson 185. I have been trying to get it ready to try out and would like to replace the water pump before we go as the boat has sat for a couple years. I have a manual but is not specific. So here go the questions before I attack with the tools.

I have the boat in Reverse but that hides the screw for the shift lever, how does it come out. There is a bolt that is recessed and partially covered by the trim tab, does this come out? There are 2 more bolts that are recessed near the trim tab. Do they come out? One looks to go through a block of some sort. If the lower unit sits only a inch off the ground whent he motor is down, can it be removed with the motor tilted up? Any info would be great as the manual is generic and sucks.

Re: 1984 Johnson 185 Lower Unit removal

The shifter screw under the bottom carb needs to come out in order to disengage the shift shaft. A 1/4" drive socket set is helpful for removal-a swivel added to that set-may be needed. There are two bolts on the tailpiece of the lower unit. One is visible from the underside of the anti-ventilation plate, the other hides under the trim tab. Remove the trim tab and you'll see it. Yes, tilt the engine up to remove the lower. The factory service manuals are the best for working on you engine. When it comes to service manuals, you get what you pay for.
