I bought a boat from a man that had a 1976 200hp evinrude on it, i had to sell the engine because it wa sto big for the boat, i just bought a boat with a 1984 johnson on it. how and what should i do about the VRO? the boat that i am taking the 115 hp off has the oil tank and all. could you tell me how to unhook it so i can pre-mix the fuel or should i just keep the VRO? i have been reading some posts that are against the oil injection. just wondering what is best for the life of the engine.

Thank you,
Jeff

Re: 1984 Johnson 115hp VRO-or no-VRO?

Welcome Jeff!!

Personally I have no problem with the old VRO system. I would suggest that it be upgraded to the new style OIS pump. They are much better pumps and use a straight ratio (it will vary some but basically a straight ratio).

You'll hear a lot of people blame a lot of problems on the oil injection but when it comes right down to it, it wasnt an injection problem.

Keeping water out of the oil tank is probably the biggest thing we see around here. The pump will pump water just as good as it pumps oil.

The bottom line is -- whatever you feel most comfortable with.
