I've posted before on the restoration project on my Dad's old boat. Carbs, fuel hoses, etc. going well - thanks to all who've posted replies helping me out. I've got the OMC service manual (off E-Bay) per some advice from a previous post - definitely better than the Seloc.

Tonight I drained the oil out of the gear case. Motor is vertical. The first thing out of the unit was clear water - not much, maybe an ounce or two, then brown oil - they had separated completely.

The magnet on the plug had a few metal shavings on it, again not much, but they were there.

I was going to replace the water pump, but now I'm needing some advice. What next? Dismantling the foot looks like a serious chore for someone who has all the tools, which I don't. Do I just replace the seals, the water pump, and the oil, or is that just asking for trouble?

I appreciate the help.

Most of the time its the little seals on the drain/fill screws that allow water in, its important to replace those seals. I had the same thing.

Get new seals, change the oil and give it a good run when ready,
then check the oil again, use new seals again.
iBoats sells the screw seals in 50 count packages for cheap money.

My two cents:
As a restoration project, spend the time to do just what you mentioned; seals, water pump, oil (and screws as mentioned by jonesg).
Lowering the gear case is not as big a deal as you think, but, it may be heavier than you think. Also, before you take it off, rig up a method to hold it upright / vertical once it's off.
In the end, you won't regret the effort or cost.
