I am looking into a 1984 evinrude 175 and was told that it smoked and at least one cylinder had 60psi compression. What are the probable causes and possible solutions to this dilemma?

Could be blown head gasket or cylinder. Maybe a rebuild.

Pull the plugs and see if the tips of them are white..... Then you know they have been burning water.... which is one of the signs of a blown head gasket. As a automotive tech I know that's one of the ways I check for blown head gasket. I would assume the same way for 2 strokes?

Either way Cylinder or Blown Head Gasket... You still have to disassemble the engine. So just take it apart and see what the problem is.

Check the plugs first, if they look okay try a decarb then recheck the compression.....normal numbers for those V6's are only around 90psi.

Good comments. It would be nice if it were just a blown head gasket. Also, I'd do an autopsy on the side of the carb that feeds fuel to that cyl. You may find that there is some debris in the high speed jet-which would make that cyl run lean.

Thanks. Head gaskets aren't too pricey are they? I know they require some time.
