I finaly got the right manual for my E 140. Upon browsing thru it, I read about T-stat service. All it says is while the powerhead is removed, service the T-stats. Then how. Can that be right? I ran right to the motor and looked, they sure look inaccesable to me. Tucked way down on the back side.
So on this year V4, the least little anything with the T-stats and you dismantle everything and pull the power unit? Say it ain't so.
Anyone know where THAT engineer lives? I...er, want to give him a little something, uh huh. :(

Re: 1984 E 140 t-stats question

I'll brighten your day - - - It ain't so. I did my 1987 OMC V4s (bubbleback style) 6 months ago without removing the powerhead - - and I am a driveway wrench. I used a 1/4" socket with a extra long extension and universal plus a 7/16" open box wrench. It is a pain but can be done. You may have to drop the pan at the base of the motor to get to the botton bolts of the cover.

Make sure that you review the diagram on reassembly.

The thermostats can be changed without removing the powerhead, however it does take a good amount of patience, the proper tools (offset boxwrench, universal sockets etc)..... and a book of your favorite words.

I have seen it done by drilling 3/4" holes in the back of the pan to access the thermostat housing bolts. Once the Tsats have been changes the holes were plugged with plastic/rubber plugs like used on car doors.

It was a good thing you said "drill", Walker. In my caveman brain I was going to use my saws-all, then pop rivit a plate back on.
An offset wrench and a wobble socket I have. I don't cuss outloud. I tend to stick my tongue partway out and mutter under my breath. Anyway, Thanks everybody. :p :)

You can do it, like Joe Reeves said.

It's best if you remove all the bolts holding the lower belly pan and mid section surround.

Once that is done, you can force the rear of the belly pan down enough to get easier access. Been there, done that.
