I have a 1984 28 ft Carver Mariner. Just bought in Dec 2009. I have taken the boat out only once because of repairs. The other day I had both engines running in the slip when I shut them down one started laboring, dieseling whatever you want to call it. I then tried to restart and the starter just makes a pinging sound like it can not turn the engine over. I saw some threads concening hydrolocking. I'm not familiar with this. Is this an issue with the starter or has the engine locked up? Thanks for your help.

Pull the spark plugs and see if the engine turns over and pumps water out of the cylinders. When an engine diesels, it can suck water back into the exhaust manifold and into the cylinders through an open valve.

Thanks guys. So it may not be the starter?? Good because I rounded off one of the nuts trying to take it off today!! I can have the starboard engine runing and when I try and crank the port it drains all the power down until it kills the startboard engine.
