a month ago i purchased the boat, after the guy telling me its been sitting a year, i put the muffs on and get it started after a few mins. Put it in the water the next day, and it would not run over 3200 rpms in gear and was real jumpy but would go to 6000 in neutral...so at first i thought it was old fuel, treated the fuel and added dry gas and new fuel, changed the fuel water seperator, ran better gas through it and nothing...boat only goes about 13 mph at 3200 rpms so. now i am replacing the plugs and wires this week and replacing the distributor cap. I am a young fishing captain, and am trying to get used to this engine and would like to fix it myself so i know for future problems...So can anybody help me out with whats going on?? Could it be the carbeurator? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, thanks.

Worthless test, it will probably go to 10,000 rpm with the spark plugs out of 2 cylinders if you tried.
What is the model number of your engine? Year means nothing as far as engine and drive.
Did you give it a full tuneup? INCLUDING points and condenser, set the dwell, and reset timing?
You also need to do a compression check. You can tune it for days, but with bad compression, it won't fix anything.
Yes it could be the carb.
Usually when a seller says the boat has been setting for a year, you can bet on a minimum of 2 and probably 3.
You also need to look at your drive oil and bellows. Especially the bellows since this boat is new to you. If it gets water in it, and gets into the flywheel cover, you could be looking at and engine pull to fix it.

Thanks a lot, and as far as sitting goes, the tag was on the boat and was winterized 10-14-10 and was in running condition when put away. I will be doing all of the things you had listed in the past post most likely tomorro or the next night, i will let you know how everything turns out, once again thanks for the help.

oh yeah, forgot to mention, a buddy of mine who "knows what hes doing" tried to change my plugs and mixed the wires up, i have found out that the firing order is 1-3-4-2 correct? and i took the cap off of the distributor and found out which wires go to which cylinders with the front cylinder towards the bow being 1, and so on and so forth...

So i found the code B230 on the side of my engine block, i take it this is the model, since i have looked around online and found information telling me it is a 2.3 litre 4 cylinder engine. Supposedly one, if not the best engine volvo made back in the day......Well now time to order the parts and get the work done. Thanks for the instructions on how to get it going. Thanks for your time.

you've most likely got an AQ125B.

Follow Don's instructions and you may get some use out of it.

Hi I just happend to have a boat just like yours aq125b I would look at the stern drive sounds like you have something slipping you have the rpm but not the thrust . Change the oil in the stern drive upper unit. It really sound line timing. Also it could be the shifting throtle mecanism not engaging properly.
