Going to local auction tomorrow, I looked at the boat and engine today, boat is immaculate, interior flawless. Looks like it has been professionally redone.

The engine is a 1974 70473m model if memory serves me correctly, got bored at the office and went for a drive at lunch and spotted the auction sign so said what the heck, say the bayliner and registered to bid.

I will not be able to do a compression check or test anything, I didi pul the cover off today, no signs of overheat on the paint by the head cylinders, all wires looked goodas can be expected, none broke or badly corroded at a glance.

I turned the flywheel by hand compression seemed consistent throught the revolutions. shifted the throttle assy forward and reverse. cables worked but did not check to see if lu engaged( limited time at lunch). Is this model a electric shift?

Steering cable frozen is the only flaw i have seen on visual inspection, complete gauge package at drivers seat.

I figure worse case scenerio a few hundred for new ignition parts and hopefuly up and running.

Open for any inputs or word of advice on what to lok for in visual inspection as mechanical inspection with compression gauge will not be allowd at auction site, oh also no tilt or trim old style lock in place pin, thanks for replies, wav

How much are we talking about? I would be wary about buying a motor without going over it mechanically (ie compression/spark test). A great deal is different. How did the boat look? Did you tap the transom for rot? A bayliner that age could be about ready for a transom/floor rebuild. Just something to look at.

that motor is the mechanical/hydro shift, the linkage engages the valve on the oil pump in the lower to shift. the replacement pump is in the $600 range. if needed. i have a 71 that the powerhead is great runner, but solenoids on the electric shift are shot, so just forward.

Yes I did check the transom and it was solid, boats actually looks like it was stored inside for a length of time judging from the trailer and condition of the cover, no UV fade at all, no rust around the rims and the hitch part of the trailer was rust free, leaf springs were colored with age but only surface rust on a quick walk around. The hardware and engine at the transom had no rust either

Thanks for the info on the hyrdo shift, i did not see a window for the shift rod to remove for disconnect.

Auction papers claim it is a 1984 bayliner 16', after researching the only line I see would be Capri and it does not look like a Capri as it has a casting platform on the front with removeable chair and the live wells and storage are in the floor, also only a set of forward looking seatsfor captain n passenger. Behind the seats by the transom is also a casting platform with in the deck storage and livewell.

I do not know the price it is an auction so the rain and cold will be bad tomorrow but i am going to go and see what they start out at on the bidding.

The hull does have some numbers on it but it sure does not look like a capri unless someone didi some serious modification to it to turnm it into a sport boat.

Tashadaddy it is just down the road from you in Greencove at the port.
If I can get it for a song and dance I will if it gets to expensive I will pass.
Thanks for the info gentlemen, will post auction results and see if I bring home a headache or just a cold,WAV.

They made a "fish package" for the older Capris. I'd be willing to bet that is what you are looking at.

The '73-74' engines were dual cable "Power Shift II". Nice system. If they work, they work great. They were pretty trouble free though. Use only OMC/BRP gear lube in them.

Thanks for the advice DJ, you are probaly correct on the fish package as it looks immaculate.

Having the first cup of coffee and listening to the rain, cats and dogs, sounds more like dogs as it is coming down pretty good and the weather man says it will be like this all day.

I will postback tonight on the results.

the shift linkage disconnects under the carbs, where are you in Keystone, we use to have a house on Gator Bone, next to White Sands, before it became 1/2 prairie.

TashaDaddy, that is a beautiful area by White Sands lake, shame most of the lakes are dry around here.

I am located in the Mcrae area off of 315C, just a hop skip n jump through the woods from George's Lake, it has been a hot spot for the speck's this year(grin).

It is a 1984 Bayliner Capri with the sport package on it, the owner did refurbish the interior, still has the tags on the new seats.

He did not use pressure treated lumber to refurbish the casting platform in the front, just yellow pine and the carpet is immaculate.

Starboard spindle on the trailer is bent, trailer is bolted together as can see where the welds broke. Had an outboard gas tank on it, do not kow why it was not hooked up to the onboard tank.

Engine started this morning first try when I turned the key on did not use choke or fast idle switch, suprised me as if it had just been warmed up,there was no key or battery yesterday.

Steering cable is frozen and broken at the engine.

The boat went for $850, I was only bidding against one other bidder, most likely the owner. I would not go more than that without checking the engine out completely.

It is amusing to watch the auctions, a few local dealers had vehicles there to be auctioned of and to watch them bid up the price on their vehicles was interesting.

that is totally illegal in Florida. do you know who the auctioneer was. if he is a licensed autioneer, he could lose his license. Haven't been to Georges Lake in Years, is there a public ramp, and where. had friends there.

I believe it was first coast auctions.

George's lake has a public ramp if you continue down Bellamy and before you run into trail ridge forest, roads turns into dirt, you will see boat ramp road on the right, it will lead you right to the public ramp.

The canal at the boat ramp shallows at the entrance to the lake, around 2 feet or so the humminbird says.

The fish camp is called Jake's Landing, they have a website
www.jakeslanding.net

It is also free to launch there, but it is shallow also, entrance to the fish camp is on coral Farms road where the front entrance for the lake is, big brick sign right at entrance. Take 315c turn on to coral farms road at the caution light in florahome, drive coral farms road about 6 mile and you will see the entrance to the fish camp on the right.

They have bait, minnows sandwiches etc etc. and if you know where the holes are, the specks are thick as it does not get alot of speck fishing, have also hooked a few white pickering in there.

Just read this reply and whew got off topic but anyway all in all saved a few hundred so, just puit it towards a gulf coast saltwater trip in the spring (grin).

Lobster snorkeling, sounds great. I know I would enjoy the keys. I have been to the Islands a few times, ST. Thomas. ST. Martin, etc and done some excellent sport fishing within sight of the beach but never been to the keys.

Maybe a next year trip for vacation as Thailand is on the agenda this year, family commitment type of thing, I hate the darn 24 hour plane ride there, but Phuket does have some good fishing and I will also be up by the Lao border in the mountains, deep lakes and big cats.
