I've used this as my trolling motor. Had it out today and it Started up several times today no issues. Last time it ran when I started it, it took a couple turns of the key for it to fire up. Last time I tried to start it nothing. Checked the kill switch and battery connections. All look ok. Ignition switch? Is there a fuse to look at? Just looking for some troubleshooting help

neutral safety switch on my '83 and '85 Yachtwins is down in the pan at the base of the powerhead -- cam has to contact switch in neutral to close starter circuit. Could be a problem with the switch.

Is this a tiller or remote motor? Does it have the remote conversion with the external box for the solenoid? If it has the conversion and is a remote model the neutral safety switch is in the control box.

Agree. That is where i was going to look. I'm guessing that is my problem. Are these hard to open up? How do you test it to know if its bad?

can just do a continuity test once you locate the switch on your setup. If pressing the button has no effect breaking and opening the circuit, the switch needs to be replaced. If the switch is in your remote box, you might first try bumping the lever back and forth a bit while operating the start switch.

Located the neutral switch. Depressed the button. Nothing. Just to be sure before I replace it. How do it check the ignition switch to make sure that's not it issue?

I put a test light to the negative terminal on the battery and touched the ignition switch. No light came on when I turned the key

What does that mean? I depressed the button and turned the ignition key. Not sure what continuity testing is

I believe that's what you meant by continuity. Sorry. I'm a pretty basic mechanic

just want to isolate the safety switch for testing -- see if pressing and releasing the button opens and closes just that one circuit. Would do that with the boat battery disconnected, using your multi tester or a battery powered continuity tester.

Got ya. I see the neutral switch is before the ignition switch so that would be the reason there is no power to the ignition. I'll replace the neutral switch and see if that's it. Really sounds like it

I got it to turn over. Simple as just cleaning off the hot battery terminal. I learned having to many connections to a single battery can cause some to corode a little faster. Always love this site. Appreciate all the great tips
