I just bougt this boat and motor and it did not come with the kill switch lanyard but it does have what looks like a spot on the controls to plug in one. It's a 1984 75 hp merc. Can i just shove a plastic peace in here or is the thing even connected. I have not tried to start the motor yet as it's 25 degrees here. Anyway do i need a kill switch lanyard key to put in this spot on the controls or can the motor start with out it? If it won's start, what can I put in it's place or should I just buy the part if i can find it?

Thanks

Scot.

If the kill circuit is operational, it won't start. It may have been bypassed, don't know, at this point.

Your local Merc. dealer should be able to fix you up.

Hey,

I went out and took a close look at the kill switch and it turns out to be a toggle switch the filps up and down. Up is run and down is off. There is a place to insert something to affect the switch position, but it is a simple toggle switch.

Thanks for the help anyway.

The toggle switch has a cover over it, with a small slit in the top. That slit is so you can push (using the key) the toggle switch down (to the OFF position) if it was pushed to the ON position without the lanyard in place. Re-reading your original post it sounds like you're more familiar with the john/rude control box kill switch which, without the cover, kills the ignition. Mercs don't operate on that system, as you have discovered.
