1984 75 hp lowerunit removal

I am trying to remove the lower unit on my 75hp 4cyl. I removed all bolts as per manual instructions, in forward gear. The lower unit has seperated from the upper, but there is a cable in the front of the unit ( i am assuming the shift cable) won't let go. How does this come apart. Other than that piece it is ready to come out.

I got the unit out, as it turns out the cable was not a cable but a hard rubber tube connected to a white hex fitting in the front of the lower unit. I had a connecter fitting part way up which I undid and it came free.
Can any one tell me what this tube is for?
