I have a 1984 70hp Evinrude. I just recently picked this motor up, and the throttle cables? I say cables because it seems to have 2 of them. I replaced the wrong one I believe. What is the other cable if its not the throttle cable, and which one is really the throttle cable? Sorry for being such a dummy. I am just trying to do this right the first time, I am going to include a few pictures maybe somebody can lead me in the right direction.

Now I am pretty sure the top one with the spring is the throttle cable, I of course replaced the bottom one that doesnt have the spring, they seem to be identical and both are from a different boat, I tried to measure and came up 2 feet too long. So I am stuck with a 33 dollar cable that is going to be garbage. Do I need to replace both of the cables?

I know that on www.boats.net they list two '84 models. You might want to look at them after getting the model number off of your boat. They should show your control cables and what they're for. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Yeah, I know the model number and I have had no problem buying the cable at my local marina. Its just there are two cables and they both do something with the throttle. So I am just confused. I sure do wish I could find more info on the internet on this subject.

One cable is used for the throttle and the other is for the shift. Both cables are usually identical (same length/type). The one that you replaced is for the shift. Most of the time it is best to replace both cables at the same time. Good luck!

Re: 1984 70hp Throttle Cable? HELP

Thanks a lot Ron, I adjusted the shift way too much, thinking it was the throttle cable trying to get more out of it. I can just adjust the shift on the fly. But its still too long anyway, and I do not believe once used I can trade this cable in. Wow I suck. And measuring length is solely by your boat length to the control box correct? Is it any trickier to change out the throttle vs the shift, or is it pretty much the same concept? I understand I will not want to adjust the throttle wheel unless absolutely necessary. I wish there was a picture forum showing this process. IF anyone knows of one please tell me.
