The engine starts fine, runs fine at full throttle for 5 minutes, then the bottom cylinder drops out. Running like this for five minutes or so suddenly (and I mean at the click of a finger)jumps back into full power running on both clylners. This usually happens twice (sometimes more) and then the boat runs fine for the rest of the day. I have noted the bottom clylinder spark plug to be fouled. Three different boat mechanics have looked at the motor each returning a verdict that electronics check out OK and that the carbi needed a clean. The problem has never been fixed. Engine has behaved this way for about 15 years. I have rebuilt the carburetor, changed the coil on bad cylinder no changes to the problem. Whenever I put a timing light on the bad cylinder I cannot detect a missfire.
Could the prob be faulty reids. The right hand side feeds the bottom cylinder and is sealed from the left (which feeds the top cylinder).
If an electrical problem whats most likely stator, trigger, or powerpack.
Also the timing is set at 12 degrees BTDC at WOT is this correct? There is a major mark at 15 but I have never been game to advance further.
Any ideas out there! Please help.
