1984 35 hp Johnson Long Shaft bumping

when running at or near full throttle, the every 6 to 10 seconds, it will bump pretty hard, kinda like you bumped a log or something. ideas? i am fairly mechanically inclined, is it something i could do? or be better to let a tech do? thanks BG12

clutch dog and forward gear at going out. it will only get worse, and the shavings may damage more.. time to rebuild lower unit.

you will need a Johnson service manual and a few special tools, if you are mechanically inclined it is doable as a DIY.

wish you had told me one of those special tools was a high quality pair of snap ring pliers!!, lol :D

got it apart and as i figured, you were right.

looked up the parts on here, but i am a lil confused. my clutch has 2 dogs, or "ears" i guess you could call them, and they are rounded. the pics of the clutch it says fits my motor shows 3, same with the gears, and they are square. is that just a picture of another type of forward gear they are using, for display?? i dont want to order the wrong gear.

my motor is J35TELCRR

part #s i came up with are, 18-1287 gear, and 18-1290 clutch.

got to crossing numbers, and looks like the former owner swapped an 81 model lower unit onto the 84 motor.
