Can someone tell me if the 1984 & the 1988 Evinrude 20 hp motors are the same basic engine
whereby the parts, such as, carbs, manifolds, cylinder heads, etc are interchangeable? I had posted a question about a 1980 Johnson 35hp being compatible with a 1984 Evinrude and was told they were. The mistake was that the Evinrude was actually a 1988, not 1984. Soooooo I would appreciate the heads up on this.

Thanks, GeorgeN

Yes George they still are the same powerhead.

At some time they stopped making the 20 Hp and only 25 and 35 HP came out, both with thru-hub exhaust midsection and lower unit. I dont remember the exact time. If you have thru-hub exhaust, jumping to 35Hp will be easy.

I just reread your posts concerning the midrange problem. I still think you might have some blocked jet problem, or maybe a VERY worn throttleshaft, although I never seen that affect so much. Did you ever clean the 3 small openings above throttle butterfly, using a steelbrush hair or similar ?

Thanks,

And Yes the carb has been professionally rebuilt including dipped all new components and I believe the holes were cleared. I do know the buterfly shaft has some visible play in it??????? This engine has run pretty good except for the transition problem. Thanks for the heads up on the cross between the 80 Johnson 35 and the 88 Evinrude 20. I will have to use the choke carb linkage if I go to the 35's carb because the 20 has the primer pump assy. If the hole in the housing is in the same spot I assume the choke linkage will go right in........I hope??

Thanks G will let youknow the progress

George

If it runs fine, you can still drill the small hole in the throat on the 35 carb, punch the little brass fitting out of your 20 carb and put in the 35 carb. That way you can still use the primer. Just make a little bracket for it as the floater bowl wont hold it. I dont think the bowl from the 20 will fit the 35 carb. That way your electric primer will work. Did you ever get both sparks to jump equal gap ? It takes more power to spark at open throttle at midrange, accelerating.
