1984 140 hp mercruiser inboard/outdrive

very first boat need help. the couple we bought the boat from had drained all the gas out so it wouldnt go bad and the boat had been sitting for months like this. so they told us to just gas up boat and then with a little squeeze bottle of gas, pour gas in carb line to get the air out, well the boat dose turn on but only for few min at a time. dose this sound right and can u give advice. thank you

need a bit more info.

did you fill (or) put some gas in the boat?

by pouring gas directly down the carb....the motor will start, but only till it runs out of the fuel that you poured down.

just before you go to start the motor, pump the throttle full once then back to nutral.
wait 3 seconds and hit the key.
the motor should start.

if it does not start. have someone sit at the controls and pump the throttle once. you should see a squirt of gas shooting down the carb. if not you have fuel issues.

Ayuh,... I would guess a dirty plugged tank or bad fuelpump...
