A while ago I changed the ignition on my 140 horse mercruiser from points to a Delco distributor which I bought from Michigan Motorz.
It worked just fine and setting the timing was easy. Today, after having run the engine flat out and having taken it down to 800 rpm to go through a no wake zone, suddenly my rpm gauge went up to between 2 and 3 thousand, the engine started to run irregular and when I tried to accelerate it started to back fire. Later,at home,I fired her up and everything was normal again.
Is this a known problem?
Thanks ,rolmops.

It's not a know problem with the EST ignition system. What shape is the plug wires and spark plugs in? If it does it again, immediately check for moisture in the distributor cap.
