I just bought a 1984 115hp johnson from a fellow and it has VRO, He fired it up for me and it started right up. When it did fire up, i noticed that there wasn't as much smoke coming out of the exhaust (like a 2 stroke) smokes  , before i boght it i did make sure to check the compression, it was 110psi on all 4 cylinders. why would it not smoke like a 2 stroke, and should i keep the VRO? and how would i go about removing the VRO? i bought the motor to put on my boat and my old motor was not VRO. Any help would be great.

Thank You,
Jeff

I would mix 50:1 in your tank (fuel) first.
Clean the oil tank for the VRO very well, then fill when installed. Mark a line on the tank at the oil level with a felt tip pen. Run the engine for the day and check the oil tank to verify oil was used (oil level lower than mark).
When proper operation is verified, begin to use straight fuel in tank.

If it is a stock VRO, don't they have a very low ratio at idle (like 150:1)? That could explain the low amount of smoke. Premixing is not a bad idea until you figure out if the VRO is working.

Jeff, you might also want to take a look at the VRO electrical harness and see how many wires it has...3 or 4. This will give you some idea of how old it is. The original pumps didn't have a harness....as alarms were added, a three wire version came out and finally a 4 wire version. You should also check the alarms associated with the pump while running the pre-mix with the pump.

if you are talking about the wire harness on the tank there are only 2 wires.

Hit the Search at the top of the page for removing the VRO. I have a pair of 1987s & run with pre-mix as I don't want to sweat anything more than I have to.

Walleyhed,

How long will it take do you think to notice oil usage? i took it out today and used about a 1/4 tank of gas, would that be enough to lower the oil level?

1/4 tank of what size tank?

You should notice oil useage by the time you use 12 gallons. Remember, that's only two pints at 50:1.

Just mix 50:1 and enjoy the boat. The oil useage will show up, if it's working.
