I have an opporunity to pick up a 1983 Searay Seville 18' open bow. It has the 2.5L 4 cyl Mercruiser. The boat itself is in pretty good shape, and the outdrive is a "newer" one. However, the lady that I've been talking to says that it wont start. It cranks, but no start. Now I hear that the 2.5 is a pretty reliable motor, so I'm hoping that it isn't anyhing too serious. Is there any common flaw to look for when I go look at it? For $800 with a trailer, I'm hoping to not get in too deep if it gets ugly. Any thoughts on these motors and this particular boat?

Thanks!

Great boat Josh. I have a 1986 similar to that one. Be sure to check for rot in the stringers, deck, and transom while inspecting it. Rot is very likely in older boats.

I tried to post a reply, but I don't think it did. Thanks for the feedback! A few more questions... how do I look at the stringers? Is there an access point that I get to and find them? Thanks!

You should be able to access the stringers in the ski locker, by the gas tank (if it has the removable plywood cover), and in the bilge area by the motor.

Okay, I'll be sure to check it out! Also, in regards to the motor, is it true that the Mercruiser 2.5 is the Iron Duke that was manufactured by General Motors?

Not sure if it's the Iron Duke or not but it is a GM motor and should be pretty reliable. Definitely not going to be real speedy though.

I certainly don't need speedy, just something for the family to enjoy. Does the 2.5 have enough power to pull a tube or two?
