I was hoping someone could help me out, Here is my delimma. I just picked up a this boat see pics and it came with a 1983 80 HP Mercury. problem is the boat had a FREE tow away sign on it a niebor down the street moved and could not take it with them. So I told him I would take it off his hands what he told me was the lower unit was good and the powerhead was good the motor had low use and by the work he put into the boat (he had just stripped it and painted it) I believe him. He say the wires are corroded and breaking from sitting for so long and he does not have the air box or the cowling wrap. So I picked up a cowling wrap off ebay and still need to find a air box. I want to dive right in but dont know where to start on getting this thing up and running I am no outboard machanic but a decent shade tree auto machanic so I have a small bit of understanding. I guess the first think I would need to do is replace the wiring , The trigger wires going to the black box are all wasted So here are my questions

what year of mercs air box will fit this motor ? The serial Number is 6233831

Please see pics

My trigger has 2 wireing harness coming out of it but yet the aftermarket I see on line only has one with 4 connections to the black box and what looks like a plug , do I need to buy another plug end or am I looking at the wrong part?

Also here are some other pics can yall see any thing else I might need to give som attention to/ replace?

There is no air box/filter for outboard motors.Usually there is a black plastic shield in front which is more about backfiring than dirt. In a marine setting there is not any dust etc to be sucked in so they run without them.I would replace the wiring one piece at a time and connect them the way they were.Next I would buy a Sealoc or Merc manual off ebay or here. If you look at one of the top sticky posts you will find a link where you can go with your serial number to find the year of it. Maxrules or oldmercs.com might be a start.

Before you spend any $$ on it ,check the compression. You are missing a LOT of parts, front plate and gasket ,silencer, gasket and cover, all the cowl brackets and cowling. Part that will interchange are the 1983-1986 4 cylinder 75hp & 80hp Merc/Mariners......
