1983 Mercury 150 hp Outboard trim switch

I have a 1983 Mercury 150 hp Outboard. The trim switch on the cowling was detached when I purchased the boat. I cleaned it up, plugged it into the proper wire on the engine, and the engine tilted up, and wanted to keep going. Do I simply have a bad switch or could it be something more?

Sounds like a bad switch. You can test it with an ohmmeter or some sort of simple test lamp.
