1983 Johnson 70hp - Do I need to re-set the timing?

Hello,

I am in the process of waiting on a new timer base for my motor. I pulled the flywheel and everything looks good under there - top main seal is in good condition, etc. When I put the new timer base on, do I need to find some place with a test wheel and o/b tank to check the timing on this motor, or will it "probably" be ok?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Should also mention that the timing seemed to be OK before I tore it apart.

And that the new part is a used part instead of a new cdi unit.

How do you know the timing was okay before you tore it apart ??

alright, well... I will update with my trial/error experience, since one of you may have to consider this in the future.

Seems I am the only one with timer base experience now! No. You do not need to redo your timing.

it seems to me you took on a very complex and critical task . ,.... and even with Joe Reeves' legnthy and absolutely perfect instructions , i wouldnt attemp it at the risk of misaligning something unless i was sure it was a link and sych job . too many variables to overlook . ,......but what exactly do you mean ? did you do the job or not ?

Getting the flywheel off was the hardest part, other than that its probably a 15 min job for the 1st timer. Very easy.

Yup, I did the job. The answer is that you can change your timer base without having to re-do the timing.

Agree with Boobie....

I always recheck the timing after replacing the timer. Who's to say that all timers are electronically and mechanically equal. Who's to say is was correct before? Just because it appears to run sweet doesn't mean it won't burn pistons.
If you're up to changing a timer, the task of rechecking the timing is well within your abilities.

Thank you for the additional info. I'll see if I can get a loaner timing light and reset the timing via the reeves method.

Good point Schematic. I've always checked the timing when ever I replaced any ignition component. They can all be different.
