If the shift shaft has a coupling, then wouldn't the drive shaft have a coupling ?

I was told all I need do is take the lower shift shaft coupling screw out , then the lower gearcase can be pulled free.

Is this all true ?

Thanks Luther

AFAIK there is no coupling in either the drive shaft or the shift rod on this model. ( its virtually the same as my '84 6 hp )

The shift rod pulls from the gear at the top
The drive shaft pulls from the crankshaft ( except that they get rusted in!)

The water tube pulls from the water pump.

BUT I have found it necessary to take the 5" extension off with the gear case then clean the drive shaft before it will slide through the bush in the extension. But fit the extension on to the exhaust hosing first when rebuilding.

All exploded diagrams in the Parts catalog

Older models did have a joint in the shift rod that was accessed once the gearcase was dropped slightly.

While its all off make sure you can get a good water flow through the powerhead. The grommet at the top of the watertube can block it off.

Thanks again. I see where the drive shaft is gummed up.

Where in the UK do you boat. I assume you have a bounty of rivers and coastline, but have not heard of large lakes.

Personally based in Chichester harbour on the south coast. Access from there to the Solent.. the stretch of water between the mainland and the Isle of Wight.

Some of the Scottish lochs and the lakes in the Lake district are popular for inland boating but in the UK you are never far from the coast.

The Solent is probably one of the most crowed bits of water in the world!

We drive about 3 1/2 hours to our sailboat on the upper Chesapeake Bay.

The 7.5 hp motor in question is on my sons sailboat on a local 1400 acre lake.
