I can't get the screw out that holds the handle on, was trying to take it off for lubrication purposes. I did get a decent grip on it with a screwdriver and turned with all my might - but it is stuck good. Should I drill it out? If so what size bit and what screw will I need to replace it?

Is there a better method? I don't think I'll be able to get it with a screwdriver. I also tried an impact driver but I don't think thats going to work either.

Thanks

If you can get the mtr in a place where you can get some good backing underneath the handle you maybe able to get the screw out with the impact driver. Impact drivers do wonders when working on an marine equipment. I don't know the screw size or what drill bit to use. I'm sure somebody on this forum does.

What are you having an issue with, there isn`t a whole lot to grease once you get that handle off.

You can force grease where it needs to be without removing the handle.

That twist knob screw is a 12-28. It can be troublesome to get the screw back in correctly as the threads are fine enough & if you get it of slightly it can crossthread. Which is what someone may have already have done.

When reinstalling the handle & screw, the coil end tension spring inside needs to be in the right location AND the inner protrusion aligned so that there is no excess pressure on this screw as you try to screrw it in place.

Re: 1983 Johnson 15 hp Tiller handle question

Thanks for the replies - I think I got it greased good enough. Part of it just drives me nuts because I should be able to get that handle off, but I can't. I tried boobie's method with no success. The stupid thing is stuck good. It doesn't sound like it is worth it to remove it. Hopefully I won't have to remove it for anything ever or I will be screwed.

I've run into this too, like I said, you can force enough in to grease it without having to remove anything.
