I'm looking at a boat that has a 1983 Johnson 115 V4. I know some basics about mechanics but not much about this engine. Is this a good engine/year model? Are there any problems that seem to be common to this engine? It has been used in salt water. Are there any certain items that need to be looked at on a pre-buy inspection? What would be some educated questions to ask the mechanic about it? Thanks,bell47.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

being salt water, last time the thermostats and impeller were replaced.

Re: 1983 Johnson 115 V4 questions

I have the same motor, i used it all last summer, it ran great.

When i winterized it, the mechanic told me "i had a little bit of water in the oil in the lower unit, and it needs a seal." but, he doesnt do that kind of work, so...

what seal needs replacing? is there a seal that usually needs replacing on this motor? i am moderately mechanically knowledgeable. is this something i can do myself? PLEEEASEE help.

Thanks,
