I just tried to start my boat which has been sitting since last year. I had no problems at all last season. Now my starter will not engage. it will turn over, but not pop up. does anyone know if this would be common and an easy solution or do i need to replace to starter motor?

Make sure your battery is fully charged and its a good batt.Clean ALL the elec connections Batt cables on batt, batt connections on solenoid and the small connections there, clean the starter connection. Make sure the ground wire is clean and has good contact. If it doesnt start then take the starter and have it tested.

You could spray a little wd-40 on the starter shaft and see if that loosens it up.

you should be able to rotate bendix gear by hand until it reaches the flywheel.
if battery is low or bad connections, there is not enough current to spin armature to rotate bendix gear up to the flywheel.
I have seen where someone greased the armature shaft, right full of gunk, the bendix could hardly spin/cleaned the shaft and oiled lightly, worked great.Very light on the oil
some times the wire lead to one of the brushes will give out and only need to be replaced, inexpensive to do

Try to jump start the battery with jumper cables connected to a fully charged battery. If the starter spins quickly/normally-it is ok. Look for a problem in the wiring harness or the starter solenoid.
