Re: 1983 Bayliner Explorer

your better off to run from anything that says bayliner (pre 2000)

and that is really a lot of money for a salt boat of that vintage......

i know you are limited due to your area....whats the possibility of traveling?

check craigs list in queen charlott ils....or if you can come farther down....you will save huge

What in the world qualifies you to make such a blanket statement as that?? It's just plain wrong and unfair to the questioner.

AKCoastie, If you want a qualified, intellengent answer to that question then head over to... http://baylinerownersclub.org/forum/ If the boat has known issues they will know. If it's priced right they will know.

Not all Bayliners are junk as some people will have you to believe...Sid

Re: 1983 Bayliner Explorer

Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately decent boats are hard to come by up here. Trying to get one up from the lower 48 would negate any savings. I should be in Florida by next summer anyway so I would be stupid not to just wait. It just sucks that my boat I have now doesn't have a cabin. Gets very cold fishing for a few hours when it's 40deg and raining.

The statement, unfortunately, is true, what are the qualifications ?? lets see......1000's of rotting Bayliners littering marinas-junkyards,back yards, landfills ect....its common knowledge pre-2000 'liners have rotting issues, not properly laminated, inferior accessories, there entry level boats generally purchased by people who dont maintain them, along with inexpensive materials and craftsmanship....bad boat.
Sorry...

I think their larger boats weren't as bad. This isn't exactly a boat that Harry Homeowner would go buy to see if his family would like boating then leave it in the yard to rot.....

Wont even touch the bashing issue, so many 80s and 90s bayliners in my marina, including mine. whatever. The explorer is a very rare bird, and didnt sell terribly well. The one in question has been repowered, and actually over powered. They were designed as displacement (slow) cruisers with a 4cyl volvo. Relatively narrow beam makes them subject to roll, and the structure is not strong enough for heavy planing speed pounding. They are getting more popular now as budget mini trawlers, and can be easily refurbed with new interiors etc. not knowing the AK market, the one you found is expensive, due to the nice trailer and new power. Have it surveyed, look it over. very cool retro boat for sure.
