I've been told by a ham friend that the Evinrude 1983 thru 1985 has oiling problems and that the last cylinder does not receive enough oil and overheats that cyclinder causing ring damage. I'm looking at a McKee 16ft with the 1983 90 hp Evinrude engine for 4,500.00

Am I asking for trouble?

I think your ham friend should stick with collards and tater salad and leave outboards alone. none of the cylinders are first or last to oil. the oil is mixed with the fuel and comes through the carbs.
I am thinking you need to have the engine professionally surveyed.

Your friend is mistaken. The lubrication of the engine derives from the oil that is mixed with the gasoline prior to entering the carburetor float chamber.

If the carburetors are clean and all fuel passages, jet, etc are as they should be, all cylinders would receive the proper equal amount of lubrication.

To add to what has already be said, the carbs are actually 2 carbs in one on each carb unit. Each unit of 2 carbs shares the same fuel bowl. If one cylinder wasn't getting oil then the corresponding cylinder to that carb wouldn't get oiled either.

You know I've misconscrewed what he said. He said it uses a loop system and the exhaust heat exits near on of the cyclinders and causes extra heat in the cyclilnder. He said the oil pump that he changed out 3 times and claims that one small gasget leak causes the pump to suck air and then fails to oil properly. An alarm goes off only too late to save a scored cyclinder.

Maybe his treatment of this motor was the problem, but he did say that the design was changed in later years.

Regards

Your friend really is a ham! Too funny!

Re-read Rodbolts post and think about it. The three who answered are among the best in the business. Ring damage is usually from lugging the motor. Get the rpms where they should be, use Champion plugs, 87 octane and good oil and that motor will last a very long time.

Do a search on "looper" and pass it on to your friend. He could use the explanation.

The 83-85 90hp V4s weren't loopers to begin with, so that's out, too. First V4 loopers came along about 1985-1986 in a 120 and 140 configuration, not 90...

- Scott

Hey Guys,

I just bought a 1984 whaler with an original Evinrude 90v4 with oil injection. I have heard that the oil injection back then was not the best and have heard horror stories about burning up the engine. I have spoken to dealers telling me that they are solid but would like a little more info from experience in the field. The motor has low hours and I intend on keeping it that way. So any maintenance suggestions, history on this motor would be greatly appreciated. J
