1983 15hp evinrude overheating

i got this engine last week, when bought he ran it hooked up to the ears and water flow was fine obviously, we get back run it in a big horse water bin and water is spraying out exhaust only and cooling it, we ran it out on the water for a couple hours and it was cooling from exhuast only, we decided since we bought a new water pump housing and impeller we would change it, after taking housing apart we found the impeller had a broken fin, so we thought that was the problem, after changing it it had no water flow out exhaust or telltail, thermostat was working fine but we decided to take it out because it was old, still nothing, than we blew pressure in there and it seemed like it it got unclogged, put it back together and there was water flow out telltail now but its still overheating, the last thing we can think of is we read there was a gromett below or near powerhead, thats the last thing we can think to check, we need help.

we just wonder why after replacing water pump its acting up, when before it was broken

also after we got water to flow out the telltail and it started overheating, we decided we were gonna try and force water in there with ears, and than it decided to stop flowing water out totally, just little little spurts

also we tested the water pump to make sure it works and water entry isnt clogged or anything
and we connected the water hose directly to the water tube, so we know it has good flow, with pressure.

find the broken fin from the old impeller !!! try a back flow (engine shut off) with the LU off... look for the broken fin

sorry i didnt mention, it wasn’t completely broken off, hanging on by a thread basically.

good news... onward to something else. you can always pull the cyl head and peek at the water jacket.... cyl head gasket is not to expensive... carefull with bolts.
salt water or fresh water engine ???

that what were probably gonna start doing, and idk what prev owner ran it in but looks like fresh, im gonna be doing both

Note-----Water that comes out off the tell tale DOES NOT circulate through the engine.-----Lately I have found thermostats that were stuck CLOSED on older motors.-----Never saw that 20 / 30 years ago.-----It is possible that grommet at the top of the water tube is blocking water flow.-----I suggest removing powerhead to replace it.-----Post the compression values on this motor.-----A blown / leaking head gasket can also cause overheating.
