1982 Merc 9.8 seems to be overheating.
Originally had improperly installed water pump impeller that did eventually fail. Replaced impeller, ensured all water lines clear, replaced the thermostat.
Seems to pump water pretty well, although at start-up it holds water back until open. So, it's kind of spooky that you don't see water at start-up. Takes a couple of minutes.
Anyway, the water coming out is hot to the touch; hotter than I would expect and hotter than any of my other repairs. And, the engine block is also hot to the touch; again, hotter than I am used to seeing after repair.
After a fast run on the water the engine will also generate steam.
Tell me this isn't normal for this engine. What temp should this engine run at? I am thinking I have a bad thermostat or maybe I could get one with a lower operating temperature.
Any insight?
Thank you.
