I tried to start my boat the other day while launching and the cranking battery was dead. I switched to a trolling battery and evidently reversed the polarity when I hooked the battery up because the starter made a whizzing sound and would not engage (assume it was spinning backwards). I corrected this and she fired right up and hours later I just got a click when i tried to start again. I removed the starter and took it apart and a couple strands from the brushes had broken off and also fallen into the bottom so i dumped those out and put the starter back together. I hook it back up and it's now spinning backwards but i'm fairly confident the polarity is correct from the battery. I also replaced the solenoid is there anything else that could cause the starter to spin in reverse other than polarity reversed at the battery? Now when I switch it at the battery the starter will engage just fine but i'm almost positive this isn't correct.
