1982 Merc 90HP Starting issues

I have intermittent starting issues with my 90hp Merc. Lately, when i try to start, it sounds like the starter is not engaging fully and you just get that "zinging" sound. Like the bendix drive is just spinning. This to me would say starter is toast or on its way out. Yet if i put a boost to the motor it takes right off. Talked with the previous owner and he stated that it always needed a really good and charged battery to start it. I am still inclinded to replace/rebuild the starter.

Any other opinions or thoughts??

maybe the splines on the bendix need a bit of lube? Check all the connections between the battery and the engine, that includes the grounds
