Hi guys! New to the forum and am amazed at all the knowledgeable folks you have here. Ok, here's what I've got: 1982 Johnson 75 hp. Just traded a work truck for this boat (1982 16' Monark) which I am in the process of making into a bowfishing rig. I was told the carbs needed work when i picked it up, but after replacing the ignition switch (the PO had lost the keys) I put muffs on it and she fired right up. Idled perfectly and throttle was responsive and right on the money. The boat had been sitting in a field for, I'm guessing 2 or 3 years. I got all the bolts out of the lower unit and disconnected the shift linkage but I'm still only able to get the unit to drop about an inch or so. I'm desperately trying to get this old girl on the water this weekend but I'm getting discouraged FAST. I have read through the older threads but haven't been able to find the directions for an '82 75hp . Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks Guys!!

Ya' gotta' have patience, they're all out on their boats.

I don't have any direct experience with your engine so I might not be much help. Usually when someone can only get the gearcase to drop a little ways they've forgotten the pin which connects the shift rod to the linkage, located just beneath the carbs, but you say you've gotten that out. Take a look at shop2.evinrude.com - they have parts diagrams which may be of some use to you.

Is the shift linkage disconnected from the shift rod itself ??

Did you remove the two bolts under the trim plate? Below the cavitation plate there are two screws to adjust the trim, those two bolts which are 14mm also have to be removed.

In addition, there is a very hard to reach bolt at the top of the shift rod that must be removed as well. The easiest way to do this is to remove the starter and shine a flashlight down into the lower cowl.

Once you address those two issues, the lower unit will practically fall off.

Best of luck!
