1982 Johnson 35hp Impeller Housing changeout

Having trouble with cooling on an 82 Johnson. Was on the water and if idling or running slow, now water flow. If i really pushed it, good water.
Tried changing the impeller tonight, did about the same.
Seems to be some potential damage to the impeller housing, so next step is to change whole housing. Question is, how does the shifter rod come off to change housing. Can change inpeller alone with shifter shaft on, but not whole housing.
Any suggestions from anyone.

Thanks,

You might want to consider investing in an OEM shop manual.....

The shift rod on that motor has upper and lower sections.....the two connect in between the water intake screens on the lower unit.....remove both intake screens and disconnect the two sections inside with two 1/2" open end wrenches, hold the lower connector while turning the upper connector, remove and retain the plastic keeper, remove the upper connector after the gearcase and exhaust housing have been separated.....once you have all other bolts/nuts removed you will be able to remove the lower unit.

Re: 1982 Johnson 35hp Impeller Housing changeout

I've got the upper/lower section figured out. Have to seperate these to drop the lower unit. Then, my question is the upper section. How do I remove this section to remove the impeller housing? Where the shifter cable/lever attaches at the motor the upper shaft is concealed within the motor housing.

I have investigated the service manuals, and the only one I can find covers 2-90 hp engines in a 15 year period, and reviews indicate it is vague regarding this perticular section of the motors.

Any input where to get a good service manual?

The OEM manual for this perticular engine runs about $95.

Thanks for the replies.

That would be why the connector needs to be removed from the bottom of the upper shift rod after you have the lower unit separated from the midsection.....the resulting separation between the upper and lower rods should give you the room.....the gearcase can then be removed leaving behind the upper shift rod still attached to the top linkage, its not necessary to remove that.....understood?

Clymers and Seloc are useless.....the only manuals to own are the OEM ones.....ebay would be your best bet as long as you dont mind used, seen them a bit cheaper than this though.....http://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-EVINRU...anuals_Literature&hash=item2eba8eb2d6&vxp=mtr

Re: 1982 Johnson 35hp Impeller Housing changeout

I guess my confusion is after seperating the top/bottom sections of the shift rod, how does the threaded section of the top rod get removed? This threaded section will not go through the impeller housing, so it would need to be removed to change out the impeller housing.

Thenks for input!!

Is there not a connector on the bottom of the upper shift rod that's removeable?

It might be timely to post some pics of your dilemna.....its seems as if your particular situation is different to what the manual procedure spells out.

I think you are correct, that is the connector that I was missing. That's why I could not figure how the shaft came off.
Thanks for your help.

No problem mate.....did you successfully remove the lower unit using the procedure given in the manual?

Hi All,

And thanks ahead of time for the help.

I have this motor on a '82 Bass Tracker 16'. I have limited experience on outboards and I just changed my first impeller on a 1975 Johnson 15hp, easy to do, just followed the guy from Duckworks instructions and pictures.

My problem is with this blankety, blank upper shift rod on this 35. I did the following.

1. Unbolted the lower foot leaving in two bolts loosened to hold the foot up.
2. Took the intake screens off and loosened the two 1/2" to disconnect them, however, that upper shift rod is a solid piece and the impeller housing will not come off unless it is removed, AND. in the meantime the drive shaft came out of the foot.
3. The motor is on the transom and when we raised the engine up the driveshaft came out of the powerhead, BUT, I am still at a loss as to how to remove the upper shift rod so I can remove the impeller housing (I am replacing the whole water pump on the '82 long shaft motor).
4. And now since the driveshaft came out of the lower and the powerhead have I opened an expensive can of worms?

I have a lot of tools and good carburetor/electric experience on outboards but this water pump stuff I am new to. I do not have a service manual as I am going to sell this Bass Tracker as soon as I replace the water pump, but I did read the forums, just not far enough to find info about taking off the upper shift rod.

Couple of questions Exactly where do I disconnect this upper shift rod because the water pump housing will not come off with it in, it must be removed, AND, can I relatively easily try and get the driveshaft splines into the foot and the powerhead and shift rod back into wherever it comes out of?

Also the water pump I was sent as correct is a Sierra # 18-3382 and the new housing does not have the long plastic cylinder that goes up into the mid section, does anyone know if this is the correct part or did I get screwd up with the new part also?

Pleas help as I am at a loss and I don't have the extra $ for a one-time use of a $40 service manual.

Thanks again for the help, you guys are the best.

Sorry for the big quote but it was the only way to respond. I found my answer to the upper rod on a different thread.
Now, how bad did I screw up with the drive shaft out and is it relatively easy to get back in (I had to order a long spacer for the water pump online before I can reassemble).

Any help greatly appreciated

don't be afraid to start a new thread with your problems...is your d/s splined on both ends?..if so, it'll slip back in when lined back up PROVIDED the pinion splines and d/s splines aren't twisted or distorted

Re: 1982 Johnson 35hp Impeller Housing changeout

It goes in as easy as anything, if you shine the torch up there you will see there is like a tapering steel housing that directs the driveshaft back up and into the powerhead, just do it gently and if it doesnt go in the wholeway turn the flyheel a touch and it will go fit right in. Once you see where the driveshaft goes you can keep the driveshaft heading in that general direction and it will end up sliding in. I think its towards the front middle of the leg. I put a bit of grease on the end of the driveshaft too as it doesnt get oil through there, but getting it in doesnt require grease.

Two things to be sure of is that the water inlet has slid into the pump outlet housing pipe, also be careful tightening the four screws that hold the casing for the shift rod connection in the gearbox unit, the plastic housing cracks if they a done up too tight

DARN IT.

The only option to respond is with a quote, how do I do it without the silly quote each time?

Guys, thanks for the info. The shaft is in good shape. I had to order a new extension tube via the parts breakdown, the one in there was bent, a piece broken off the top where the gasket seats (someone had tried to fix it with silicone), the grommet was crushed and various gaskets old & crumbling, and the impeller had a serious permanent curl. I'll wait for the new part and get back on this thread when I get it and add pics when I start to reassemble.

I just put a new impeller in a 1976 Johnson 15hp and I have a dilemma, I'll start a new thread.

Thanks to all who helped.
