You would be better off comparing to local ads to see what comparable units are selling for. The prices vary great by region. In Minnesota, a older motor does have as much use on it as one in Florida due to weather.. So there can be great disparity.

I assume the motor is the same vintage?

Don't have the year but yes i would assume it's near the same. It's not original though, so may be a tad newer. The seller put alot of effort into the boat.

I live on a small lake / Army Corp water and can leave it docked privately for $100 / year. Mostly be used for fishing and sunning, no further than 2 miles.

Any bug-a-boos I should be looking for?

Maybe 4 adults and 2 children at most.

Kinda scared because of ignorance and you guys are a blessing of wealth of info. I haven't read this much since grade school,..lol!

You don't say where your from so it is hard to say whether your in the ball park or not.. You want to check the condition of the deck and ensure it is not rotted. You can view it from underneath. You also want to check out the motor real good. I wojuld recommend a compression test to ensure you have good and even comperession, check the lower unit lube for milkiness (indicating water and potentially expensive LU repairs), and a good in the water test.

Also, when you take the test on the water, it is best for the engine to be cold. So checking this by putting your hand on the top of the cylinders before it is started is a good idea. This will allow you to see how hard it is to start cold and see the full spectrum of motor operation.

Also verify the year of the motor as the motor on this age rig is the most expensive and valuable part.

Re: 1982 Harris 24 ft $$$$

I'm from SW PA.

If I could post pics I would. I contacted a local marina that serviced it and they agreed to do a check of it contingent to my purchase. It was winterized so the lower end oil is fresh. I did ask them to do a compression and spark test for me as part of the inspection. They said the last service was re-installing a water pump correctly? Not sure what that meant?

I'm planning on looking at it this weekend and maybe giving hand money to hold it pending a good report from the marina and a subsequent test run. The motor was recently installed, it had a 9.9 on it before he said so I need to find out the specifics on that.

The pics would be a big help I suppose? Would it be OK to PM the link to you? I don't really want to forward the sellers personal info on the public forum.

No way worth $5k then? The boat is totally re-done.

Nope. Thirty years old and only powered by a 50. Not saying it won't meet your needs and not saying you shouldn't get it; just saying it's not worth 5 grand. The problem with a boat that has been restored to any significant extent is the person who did the work, usually the seller, understandably tends to develop an emotional attachment, and as a result maintains an irrational conception of its worth. As Roger says, comps are king, but you may have trouble finding any given its age and apparently unusually good condition. I wouldn't be comfy paying any more than $3500, and I'd have to think long and hard before I did that. If you wanted to post pics without the link maybe you could save just the pics and insert them as thumbnails. Good luck and welcome aboard. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Re: 1982 Harris 24 ft $$$$

If this boat is very nice and runs real well I think it is worth the $5k around here in South Central PA.

About any roadworthy pontoon trailer is worth a grand.

I sold a '79 50 Evinrude to the first guy that looked at it last Spring for $750, so the motor is probably worth close to a grand.

That being said do all the screening that the guys above have suggested and remember that a guy selling a boat in March NEEDS to sell it. I never expect to pay a dime more that 80% of the asking price for any boat or vehicle, and regardless of the condition I would start any offer at about 60% of the asking price.

Other significant factors are: canvas? covers? electronics? life jackets and other equipment?

Did they recarpet with good stuff or junk, same for the seats, wood bases are bad, rotocast plastic bases are good.

Those old Harris Floteboats were nice boats and held up well, I hope this one is in good shape and you can pick it up and join in all this 'tooning fun.

I bought a 1982 24ft Aqua patio Executive Cruiser with fairly new furniture and a 50 HP Johnson with Trim but no trailer last year for $1500. Check out the pictures. Click twice to maximize. This year I'll strip old carpet and re-carpet it. It came with Ladder, two gas tanks, fire extinguisher and 13 new life jackets. Bought from private owner. Nope I think 5k is too much. With trailer more like $3,500

No way is that worth 5K, regardless of how nice it is it is still a 30 year old pontoon, that boat around where I am would go for 3 tops and it would take awhile to sell it at that.

Maybe that is what they go for in PA, I would check other adds but I woud geuss you could do better than that for that money.
