Before you decide to do or not do, I would recommend you buy a manual for this engine and study it, look it over, and learn some of the particular things we look at to determine what might be the next step.
Manuals are available right here at iboats and easy to obtain.
You can use the search tab at the top to search past topics on rebuilding these engines.
Type in Johnson or evinrude 90 or 110, 115 etc, and you will find more info than you can read in a night.

p.s. Welcome aboard!!! :)

1982 evinrude 90hp rebuild?

i have a 1982 evinrude 90 hp i came on they boat i just had bought. I dont know if i should rebuild it or just buy a new one. The guy said it came off the water running but he got water in the motor. So i took off the heads to see what i could find all 4 cylinders where good but 1 had some white corrison in it. I clean it all up not scars on the cylinder walls that looked good. So i assummin he blew a head gasket not to sure i dont know much about boat motors but anyways the motor had sat for about 3 yrs sinced that has happened. I put some decarb in the cylinders to get it so is wasnt locked up. Should i rebuild the motor or just junk it? I really dont have much money to buy a new one but was thinking about rebuilding it. It doesnt seem that hard. any good advice?

Is your motor seized or can you rotate it by the flywheel. Maybe its fixable, without rebuild.

Re: 1982 evinrude 90hp rebuild?

It is locked up but im going to put some mystery oil in it my dad had told me about tomorrow which i hope will do the trick, i am going to order the service manaul tomorrow. I just want to make sure if i rebuild it that i am going to be happy with it since it is a old motor. I am pretty handy with car motors but boat motors look like little go cart engines seem easy to do but really dont know much about. I was priced at about 20 hrs of work at $55 a hr for a rebuild and thats not including parts. Where would a good place for me to order parts at for a good price i found one place but it was like a 1000 bucks for parts pistons and all but what do i really need? i mean if im going to do it im going to do it right. I dont want to be on the water and something go wrong and i hate doing this twice.

The cylinder walls look in pretty good shape and pistons to. I havnt seen the crank yet havnt took it that far apart but i guess i might get into it this week. Should i just rering it and do the bearings and not get new pistons? this is the place i found but seem a little pricey
http://www.maxrules.com/fixphead.html

I mean i could go on for ever i guess i just want a little input from someone that knows what they are doing.

Thank you for your advice i cant find anyone around here willing to tell me what to do cause they would rather do the job so they can make money. which i can understand.
