I was given a boat, with this engine and we got it started but it wasn't peeing, so we opened it up and fixed the water pump. Problem is now the boat is getting water in the lower unit (the gearbox) so what could be the problem? a gasket?

Howdy, nerf55.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The most common cause (and the most common error by newbies) of water in the gearbox is failure to replace the gaskets under the Drain and Vent plugs on the foot. They are one-time use crushable gaskets, not washers.

It is possible, of course, that the lower end seals have failed, but I would replace the plug gaskets first.

If this problem started after changing the water pump, I would have a closer look at the seal below the water pump. Increased water pressure from pump and a bad seal - quite a common problem. Do a pressure and vacuum test of the gear housing, that might give you the answer. When testing, the best is to remove the gearcase and water pump and rotate both shafts during testing.
