I have an Evinrude outboard Model E60TLCNM (1982)
The motor is slowly cranking, similar to when the battery is nearly flat. This occurs with plenty of power geting through and connected to additional jump battery.
Starter Motor bevel gear is sticking at the top of its travel but even when I tap it down the motor won't start. The problem first occured 2 weeks ago. At that stage it would start after a few attempts. Now nothing !
Any Tips for a perplexed Australian Boatie?

Good morning.
Sounds to me like you want to check your starter and all power connections going to it.
It could be as simple as a bad ground connection, or maybe servicing your starter or having to replace it.
Good luck.

OZracing,

Olmops has a good suggestion about checking ALL major battery connections. Pay particular attention to the battery ground (-) on the engine block.

The starter bendix can be lubricated. Use a light machine oil or WD-40.

Rotate the starter bendix by hand the opposite direction of engine rotation. It will walk up the shaft. Do this several times while lubricating it until it rotates up freely.

The quickest check is to see what voltage the starter is receiving. Clip the positive voltmeter lead to the starter cable post and the negative to the starter frame. Have someone crank over the motor and see if the voltage is above 10 volts. If not, then you have battery, connection, cable, or terminal problems. Then hook the meter to the battery posts and crank the engine, if the battery voltage is more than 1 volt higher than the starter voltage, check the connections and cables.

If the starter gets hot very quickley, then it should be replaced or rebuilt.
