i just picked up a 1982 evinrude 35hp, motor is really clean one owner well kept. when i ran it yesterday i checked the cylinder head by touch to see if it was running cool, it was hot to the touch . pee stream is strong , i have really hot water and some steam coming out of the exhaust ports on the leg at idle . when throttled the water flow increases , but at idle it just sprays out. i pulled the water jacket and the stat ,the question is can you run this motor with the stat guts removed ? i have seen guys put the same id washer in place of the stat and they say no problems , second could this be somthing else the engine idles perfect runs great no power loss does not sound like it is hot . just feels like it should be running cooler .i'm in texas so the water temp is not cold by any means i mostly fish saltwater . i am also going to change impeller today just as a precaution.

the stat would not be there if not needed. the engine is designed to run at 143 degrees to 160 degrees, the stat starts to open at 143 at 160 is completely open. running without stat i will run cold, effecting idle, and preformance, also will increase carbon build up. change the impeller, and the stat. you are going to have less flow at idle, than at wot. it will run without the stat. but get one in it soon.

thanks , i have opted to just replace the stat , is it common for them to go bad? if i'm correct i should be able to touch the top of the cylinder head while it is running and it should not be really hot? my main worry is that it is somthing major causing the steam , i checked the stat in a pan on the stove and it opened , so it might not be bad . after the stat is replaced and the impeller, if it still feels hot what should i look at next?

Many engines run at a temp to prevent you from keeping your fingers on them. But you should be able to touch them for 2-3 seconds before it becomes uncomfortable and you have to pull back.

the dealer sell test crayons, that you put on the head to test the temperature. they only melt at a certain temperature.

Just flick a few drops of water on the head. It should not boil.

Actually, my '84 35 runs too dadgum cool. I think you have pump trouble.
