Hey everyone, I recently picked up a 1982 Evinrude 115HP that I was thinking of stripping down and selling the parts off but I might see about putting it into service now...

Not sure what exactly happened yet but I bought the motor with low compression and possibly bad LU for $150

I finally had a chance to unload it and get to work and yikes! The coils were melted to the heads! Along with some of the connectors and wire insulators being melted! Now, after pulling the heads I found both head gaskets to be blown on three of the cylinders and that the motor has been rebuilt with 020 pistons sometime in the past.

There's some pings in the #1 piston crown and head (cylinder feels clear) and I suspect the rings may be broken, cylinder 3 has what feels like a single gouge and 2&4 feel fine. So I'm going to pull the intake covers to check the rings on 1&3 but my main concern is... can extreme overheat cause head gaskets to blow?

I'll try to get some pictures later today if the rain lets up. I also want to see what you guys think about the gouge in #3.

Thanks!
