Hi, i'm trying to resolve steering problem i have in my used old boat :)
out of the water there is no play and steering works great, once you put it in the water and add speed - steering degrades as the boat goes faster. could someone please tell me what to look for in such setup IMG_0276.JPGIMG_0277.JPGIMG_0278.JPGIMG_0284.JPG

Since it turns ok out of the water, you may need to adjust the trim fin on the back of the drive.
If they are turned the wrong way or too far one way, it will make the steering very hard.
The 270 style drives fin is also an exhaust outlet, the 280's just have a fin.

yep, i've read about this already, mine is in perfect straight line with rest of boat, not turned left or right.
does it mean that i have to turn it one way or another?
also i'm not sure whether there is a cable inside that hose that goes from rail with gear behind steering wheel all the way to back of boat or its filled with grease or fluid which pushes out piston.

thanks !!!!

It's not a hose, it's a cable, similar to the throttle and shift cables, only bigger.

It is possible the cable is wearing inside, and when the drive is in the water and under load that it's causing the cable to bind on itself. Being 30 years old, that is very possible. The only option if that's the problem is to replace the cable and helm assembly.
